-They define fixation as a way of trying to unsuccessfully solve a problem. A person who is fixated will continuously try to solve problems with the same method, even though it is the wrong method.
When and why does Gerber recommend throwing away previously generated ideas?
-Gerber believes that erasing old ideas will reduce commitment to them, and therefore allow for new ideas to be generated. We can then focus on the future rather than the past.
What is your reaction to the idea of “throwing away” some aspect of your team project ideas? In his discussion of the history of innovation, Johnson says that breakthrough ideas seldom come as a flash of inspiration and that innovative ideas are often the result of the collision of several hunches. What do you think about Johnson’s thesis? Thinking about your group project ideas and your in-class teamwork, how might you combine them to create something more innovative?
-I would support discarding my team's old ideas, and focusing more on the topic rather than generating ideas off of other ideas, which tend to stray from the main intent. I agree with Johnson's thesis. Without gathering evidence and drawing from several different conclusions, it is often difficult to reach new better solution to a problem. In our teamwork, we could combine several ideas from different think-sessions- sessions where we discarded old ideas and tried to think fresh. then combining these several ideas could lead to our breakthrough, just as Johnson states.
